Wednesday May 8, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

Germany, 2012 – Rated PG – 105 minutes – in German
Written and Directed by Christian Petzold
Cast Nina Hoss, Ronald Zehrfeld, Jasna Fritz
Removed from a prestigious medical post in East Berlin and reassigned to an underfunded rural hospital, Barbara (Nina Hoss) resentfully isolates herself from her new colleague, chief physician Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld), whom she suspects is keeping tabs on her at the behest of the local Stasi officer. Seeking solace in clandestine trysts with her West German lover Jörg (Mark Waschke), who is working to effect Barbara’s escape, Barbara allows her icy mask to slip when she meets a young pregnant woman who has contracted meningitis. As Barbara and Andre nurse Stella back to health, they begin to bond over their shared passion for medicine. But even as she finds herself falling in love with him, Barbara still cannot be sure that Andre is not a spy. When Jörg returns to offer her a sure-fire escape from the country, Barbara must make a difficult decision between her desire for freedom and her growing attraction to a man who may be waiting to betray her.

Quinte Film Alternative - The Sapphires
Posted February 2, 4:18 PM
Wednesday May 22, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

Australia, 2012 – Rated PG – 99 minutes
Written by Tony Briggs, Keith Thompson
Directed by Wayne Blair
Cast Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy
The Sapphires is an effervescent, irresistible crowd-pleaser, with plenty of spunk and sass to go along with its fully earned sentiment.
The Sapphires, is a portrait of a late 1960s girl group about four young Koori girls who are discovered one night in a dusty outback tavern by lanky, often soused Irish-born talent scout Dave (Chris O’Dowd). With a sharp ear for honey-tinged voices, Dave convinces the girls to switch their act from country and western to rhythm and blues and vows to make The Sapphires shine — not just in town, not just in the region, not just in the country, but all over the world.
