Belleville Theatre Guild - THE PAJAMA GAME
Posted August 9, 1:24 PM
June 2 - June 18, 2011

The Guild's musical this year is set in a pajama factory that is on the verge of a strike. The show deals with the conflict and attraction between Babe, the Union leader and Sid, the management's factory superintendent. Will love win out? Of course. This is a musical comedy after all. But not without some fighting over a "7 1/2 Cents" raise and some great songs including "Hey There", "Steam Heat" and "Hernando's Hideaway". The show won a Tony in 1954 when it first appeared on Broadway and won another in 2006 for its revival. Come to the show - this could be your "Once a Year Day"..
Director Steve Forrester.

Posted February 2, 4:18 PM
Wednesday April 13, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

(UK, 2010; 129 minutes)
Directed by Mike Leigh. In this slice of life, a married couple who have managed to remain blissfully happy into their crumbling autumn days are surrounded by friends, colleagues and family over the course of four seasons in one seemingly average year. Nearly everyone appears to suffer some degree of unhappiness or at least confusion, shown with Leigh's characteristic storytelling that is uniquely lifelike and infused with compassion.

When a notary sits down with Jeanne and Simon Marwan to read them their mother's will, the twins are stunned to receive a pair of envelopes—one for the father they thought was dead, and another for a brother they didn't know existed. In this enigmatic inheritance, Jeanne sees the key to her mother's retreat into unexplained silence during the final weeks of her life. She immediately embarks for Lebanon to uncover her family history. Simon, on the other hand, is unmoved by the posthumous mind games of a mother who was always distant and cold. But his love for his sister is great, and he soon joins her in combing their ancestral homeland in search of a mother very different from the one they knew. A deeply moving coming-of-age story that brings the horror of war to a starkly personal level, delivering a powerful and poetic testament to the indelible scars of the cycle of violence, and the uncanny power of the will to surviveInfoline: 613-391-4310, info@quintefilmalternative.ca

Quinte Film Alternative - Made in Dagenham
Posted February 2, 4:18 PM
Wednesday March 16, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

(UK, 2010; 113 minutes)
In the words of Roger Ebert: "'Made in Dagenham' takes place as recently as 1968, when the British Ford plant in Dagenham paid women significantly lower wages than men — with the agreement of their own unions and the Labour government of Harold Wilson. Why was this so? Did they do less work? No. In fact, they were highly productive. It was so because the unions, the company and the government were run by men, and I dunno, I guess they just weren't used to thinking about women in that way. 'Made in Dagenham' is a delightfully entertaining movie based on fact. The women went on strike, annoyed their unions and their husbands and embarrassed Wilson, who was caught with his principles down."

Belleville Theatre Guild - SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER
Posted August 9, 1:24 PM
March 31 - April 16, 2011

Delighting audiences for over 200 years, Oliver Goldsmith's best-known play provides a raucous tale of mistaken identities, spirited hijinks, and a good dose of lighthearted romance. Charles Marlow, bashful around women of his own upper classyet quite frisky amongst the serving girls—is on his way to the Hardcastle household to court Kate, the daughter of a country squire. Hilarity ensues when Marlow and his friend Hastings mistake the home for an inn, the squire for the inn keeper, and Kate for a serving wench. When Kate realizes that her tongue-tied and nervous suitor needs a lesson in the art of love, she quickly transforms herself into the type of woman who can teach it.

Quinte Film Alternative - Soul Kitchen
Posted February 1, 4:24 PM
Wednesday February 2, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

(Greece and Hungary, 2009; 99 minutes)
German-Greek chef Zinos watches his girlfriend leave for a job in Shanghai, and finally gears up to sell his restaurant, Soul Kitchen, and follow her. Then Zinos disturbs the peace by hiring a chef too talented to warm up the gazpacho for the greasy spoon clientele. In the weeks before the closure of the sale, pure anarchy breaks out: the chef cooks what he's always wanted to cook, a new DJ gets the guests dancing after their meals, artists exhibit their work—and the guests like it. From acclaimed director Fatih Akin (born in Hamburg to Turkish parents), best known for the emotionally harrowing HEAD ON (2004) and the transcendent THE EDGE OF HEAVEN (2007).

Quinte Film Alternative - Barney's Version
Posted February 2, 4:18 PM
Wednesday February 16, 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm

(Canada and Italy, 2010; 132 minutes)
Based on Mordecai Richler's last (and arguably best) comic novel, BARNEY'S VERSION tells the warm, wise and witty story of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), a seemingly ordinary man who lives an extraordinary life. A candid confessional that spans four decades, two continents and three marriages. Not only does Barney turn out to be a true romantic, he is also capable of all kinds of sneaky acts of gallantry, generosity, and goodness when we—and he—least expect it.

Set in Wales, it is the musical story of Christmas day itself, from its quiet, magical beginning full of thrilling expectations
through to the evening when the boy Dylan creeps up to bed, filled with the joy of a perfect day. Replete with the colourful characters of a typical small town and the humorous escapades of every neighbourhood, the day Dylan Thomas depicts in his lyrical, poetic style is the very essence of Christmas as seen through a small boy’s eyes. A treasure this holiday season. Based on the story by Dylan Thomas. Director Moira Nikander-Forrester.
